Concrete Floor Grinding: What to Discuss Before Work Begins

Concrete grinding removes material from the surface with abrasive equipment. It can prepare a slab for a compatible coating, remove some surface irregularities, or form part of a polishing process. Grinding and polishing are different operations; a ground surface does not automatically become a glossy polished floor.
Start with a surface assessment
The contractor should assess existing coatings, contamination, moisture, cracks, movement, and the intended finish. Grinding cannot repair a failed base or guarantee that moving cracks will stay closed. Existing floor coverings and adhesives may need separate assessment before removal.
Control concrete dust
Grinding concrete can release respirable crystalline silica. Contractors need suitable dust controls and work practices for the equipment and task. Choose the intended finish
Preparation for a coating or overlay
The required surface profile depends on the next product. The preparation method, repairs, cleaning, and moisture requirements should follow that system rather than a generic grinding-depth rule.
Polished interior concrete
Polishing uses an appropriate sequence of abrasives and treatments to reach the agreed appearance. Existing slab condition and aggregate can affect the result. Ask for a sample or realistic finish expectations.
Outdoor surfaces
A glossy interior-style finish is not automatically suitable for patios or other wet outdoor areas. Discuss texture, drainage, exposure, maintenance, and traction for the intended use.
